First US Soldier from Clay County to Die in WWI

Mr. Neyman volunteered for service in June, 1917. Prior to his enlistment, he held a position with the Southern Railway. After training, he was deployed overseas to France in September 1917 where he rose to the rank of Corporal. Corporal Neyman became the first soldier to give his life in the defense of his country when he died from complications of pneumonia on January 19, 1918. His body rests in a soldier's grave in France. The American Legion in West Point is named for him.
